Summer Connections

Summer is a magical time to delve into a new interest or take a deep dive into a passion. ANS offers Summer Connections that are open to ANS and non-ANS students. A diverse offering of Summer Connections design experience for Rising Kindergartners through Seniors.

Summer Connections will be hosted as one-week or multi-week (Monday – Thursday) registrations, to connect to one another during synchronous sessions and to foster both off- and on-screen exploration. Browse the offering to learn more about what you will connect to!

Course Description

Join us as we canvas different countries around the world! Each day students will explore a new country as they take virtual field trips to landmarks and museums. As social scientists, students will consider their curiosities, keep a travel journal or blog where they will learn about questioning skills, document their travels, and learn about social norms and differences.

Breve reseña de la Conexión:

Desarrollar competencias de cómo: saber hablar, escuchar, leer y escribir; al transmitir ideas u opiniones de forma oral y escrita. A través de un buen Debate motivador y con temas adecuados, surgen preguntas y controversias, que despierten el interés y desafían las mentes de los participantes; haciendo que se cuestionen la propia información y creen dudas a resolver. El objetivo principal de esta conexión es preparar a los estudiantes a expresarse de la mejor manera a través de la oratoria, la investigación y el análisis crítico y reflexivo. Cada semana haremos práctica de debates de diferentes temáticas, de lo escrito, leído o escuchado.

Week 1: June 15 – June 18:

El arte de hablar en público: la pasión por la oratoria

La práctica de saber hablar en público a través del debate permitirá a los estudiantes desarrollar las habilidades que usarán en el futuro en su preparación académica. Debatir es una proceso de “aprendizaje activo” que exige a los estudiantes a participar en una actividad en donde reflexionan críticamente sobre lo que están haciendo. En el arte de la oratoria, aprenden a persuadir, conmover y convencer; presentando evidencias y apelando a las emociones para defender sus argumentos.

Week 2: June 22 – June 25:

El arte de escribir (la ortografía y redacción)

La habilidad de la expresión escrita es muy importante y fundamental para comunicar las ideas con eficiencia, debido a que es una necesidad escribir correctamente para poder enviar mensajes claros y coherentes. En esta semana reforzaremos los aspectos fundamentales de la escritura: ortografía y redacción de párrafos.

Week 3: June 29 – July 2:

El arte de la buena lectura recreativa y analítica (comprensión lectora)

Saber leer significa percibir, comprender e interpretar lo escrito. Es ser capaz de transformar un mensaje escrito en un mensaje sonoro siguiendo ciertas leyes muy precisas. Es comprender el contenido de dicho mensaje, siendo capaz de juzgarlo y de apreciar su valor estético. En esta semana desarrollaremos habilidades con lecturas recreativas y reflexivas de hechos reales e imaginarios.

Week 4: July 6 – July 9 :

El arte de saber escuchar (leyendas y mitos de América).

Saber escuchar es aquella habilidad que nos posibilita comprender a los demás, no solo en lo relativo a la información que nos transmiten, sino en saber percibir sentimientos y perspectivas de las otras personas; e interesarse activamente a los que nos están diciendo. Cuando sabemos escuchar, sabemos seguir instrucciones, las que son claves para alcanzar el éxito.

Join me on a Lego Adventure! This summer connection will be a combination of academics, read alouds, STEM challenges, English speaking skills, and exploration all with LEGOS! We will learn about how Lego’s are made, visit Lego museums and have Lego building challenges If you are a Lego lover, this is the summer connection for you! Note: Your child will need legos or duplos available to work with throughout the week.

Course Description

Join us in an English language immersion experience to embrace the magic of summer!

June 22- June 25 Camping Fun

Who loves camping in the summer time!?! In this summer connection we get to do fun camping activities virtually! You will learn camp vocabulary, tell campfire stories, get out in nature to create and explore, make camp crafts, learn new songs and even follow a recipe to make a camp food favorite! Academics will be included throughout the course through read alouds, counting, singing, rhyming and science observations. Grab your binoculars, hiking stick, and flashlight and come join me in the adventure!

July 6 – July 9: We ❤ the 🌏

Let’s dig into our ANS core value of Environmental Stewardship, and learn about how we can take care of the Earth. We will spend one day discussing and exploring each of the following topics: endangered animals, the ocean, the rainforest, and recycling. We will practice vocabulary, math, and reading skills in fun and interactive ways. Each day will also include a project or craft. Join me in this class to discover all the wonderful things about our world and how we can work together to make it a better place!

Course Description

This three week course will offer students opportunities to practice their Science and Engineering skills. During the week we will be exploring science experiments, discussing phenomena we observe and using the design process to complete different engineering challenges. Students will be given the opportunity to:

  • Be creative/innovative
  • Learn new vocabulary in English
  • Discuss other student’s projects and brainstorm ideas to redesign
  • Draw a model
  • Plan and conduct an experiment

This will be an engaging online course where students can connect with other students and discuss their ideas using Flipgrid and Google Meets! Get ready to stretch your mind and bring your critical thinking skills, it’s about to get interesting!
